  • Una was born on Île de Maréclat, one of the small islands peppering the route into Limsa Lominsa. While some outsiders know the island’s language as Rhotano Creole, speakers call it Maréclat. Her thick accent and speech pattern, shaped by her island upbringing, makes her surprisingly difficult to understand, especially for Sharlayan peers accustomed to her polished written correspondence.

  • Una’s obsession with research has kept her largely solitary, absorbed in cataloging, analyzing, and theorizing. Myraelis, by contrast, has been the one to draw her out into the wider world. As for romance, her inexperience and Myr’s constant presence left little room for such inclinations, and her one sole attempt ending in heartbreak leaves little inclination to try again any time soon.

  • Unlike most Sharlayan scholars, Una has a deep love of food, particularly the dishes of her youth on Île de Maréclat. Her specialty is Galadion Gumbo, which she prepares meticulously. Myraelis, being Voidsent, has little concern for flavor and consumes meals purely for the aether they provide.

Timeline

  • 28th Sun, 4th Umbral Moon, 1557 of the Sixth Astral Era: Una is born on Île de Maréclat to local fisherfolk.

  • 1561: A sudden typhoon swallows her parents’ boat and ravages the island. Safely ashore and too young to fully grasp what happened, Una becomes an orphan. She is taken in by recently arrived Sharlayan archeologists, Thalorin and Ysella Velaris, who are eager to help the community rebuild.

  • 1563: After much time together, the Velarises formally adopt Una. She is fascinated by their call to study living civilizations, such as the people of Île de Maréclat. They raise Una in a home full of adventurous fieldwork and meticulous note-taking, and she falls in love with the sense of discovery as she learns about her culture alongside her new family.

  • 1564 – 1572: Una grows up traveling between home and field sites on the island, learning observation, documentation, and the thrill of discovery. She absorbs both her Maréclatian heritage and Sharlayan scholarship, especially after leaving the island to relocate back to Sharlayan in 1568.

  • 1572: The Seventh Umbral Calamity devastates Eorzea. While far from the worst destruction, the event leaves a deep impression on Una, now 15; reinforcing her desire to preserve knowledge.

Argilenne Terrechant (Best Friend): An Au Ra Una met soon after arriving in Eorzea, Argilenne quickly distinguished herself by taking an interest in Una as a person rather than as a curiosity. Though her meddling in Una’s love life was neither asked for nor subtle, it did lead to her sole failed relationship. While Una is bitter about it, she still readily shares drinks and confidences with the first woman to see her beyond the circumstances of her arrival.
